The Greater Prairie Chicken is a wild gamebird of the Great Plains region. They are a member of the grouse family and not a true chicken. They are most noted for their elaborate mating dance and booming noises. From February to July each year, the males dance and boom to attract the females. The female then selects the male for mating in April or May. Due to the aggressive fighting among males, only one male is placed in each pen during the mating season. The female leaves the area after mating and nests and raises the young by herself. In captivity, the females almost never raise their young due to the lack of privacy.
